Job Duties
The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) Hampton Roads District is seeking a Welder to perform certified welding on equipment, bridges, ferryboats, existing buildings and new construction and framework and high-pressure vessels, and ensure welds meet certification standards. As a Welder you will Weld and accurately cut metal to repair a variety of equipment, perform precise modifications to various equipment as required to adapt equipment for special accessories, locate parts and materials, provide repair estimates, and maintain accurate records of completed work. You will also perform quality repairs, modifications and fabrications on equipment, machinery, structures and high-pressure vessels using advanced welding techniques.

Ability to read and interpret blueprints and sketches.
Ability to safely weld in an overhead position.
VDOT is an emergency response agency, and this position may be designated to support emergency operations during certain situations. As such, you may occasionally be required to work an assignment that includes hours outside the normal work schedule including weekends and holidays. Not all designated employees are provided an emergency operations assignment.

Minimum Qualifications
• Valid driver's license.

• Ability to obtain CDL and DOT medical card within 11 months of employment and maintain thereafter. Must comply with DOT and VDOT policies and standards when operating CDL equipment.

• A combination of training, experience, or education in Welding, or related field desired.

• Valid Commercial Driver's License with appropriate endorsements

Fingerprint-based background checks, references, work history, and DMV records, pre-employment physical and drug screen. This position also requires approved safety shoes as a reimbursable expense. Valid driver’s license and CDL required.
All drivers hired without a valid CDL in hand are required to obtain their CDL within 11 months of their hire date. You cannot operate commercial motor vehicles prior to receiving the necessary licensure and medical certification. Effective February 7, 2022, new Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) regulations require entry-level drivers (drivers who are seeking to take the skills test in order to obtain a CDL for the first time, upgrade their CDL from a Class B to a Class A, or take the knowledge test to obtain a hazardous materials endorsement for the first time) to complete FMCSA- approved Entry-Level Driving (ELD) Training before the Department of Motor Vehicles can grant the requested CDL or endorsement. The course is comprised of 160 hours, on average, of training. VDOT is willing to assist with your enrollment in and payment for the course upon your acceptance of an ELD Training Tuition tenure and repayment agreement.

Position is designated as essential and, as such, will be required to work outside normal hours, weekends, and holidays during emergency situations which may include but are not limited to inclement weather, disaster response and emergency operations. Travel may be required.
VDOT utilizes a market-based pay program, which has been approved by DHRM. Therefore, advertised rates of pay may or may not align with the Commonwealth pay bands.
