VDOT’s Fredericksburg District has exciting an opportunity available in its Preliminary Engineering Department. We are seeking qualified candidates to fill a Survey Manager vacancy. This position manages and directs district survey operations and staff. They direct and support the professional development of survey personnel and ensure all surveys follow VDOT and APELSCIDLA rules and regulations.
The Fredericksburg District includes 14 counties, 1 city and 11 towns. District survey staff are located at the district office in Stafford and at the Northern Neck Residency office in Warsaw. Additionally, VDOT utilizes consultant support as needed for survey services. The District Survey Manager would be responsible for scheduling and oversight of all survey work in the district.
Required skills for job & position:
• Knowledge of VDOT survey and APELSCIDLA standards, specifications, policies, and procedures
• Extensive knowledge of engineering and construction survey criteria, methods, standards, and specifications
• Knowledge of survey engineering principles as they relate to engineering survey and roadway design
• Ability to effectively plan and schedule work
• Ability to collect, analyze and compile data into technical reports and presentations
• Skill in the use of electronic data collection and surveying equipment
• Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing with diverse audiences
• Ability to lead, coach, counsel, and train others
• Ability to read and interpret roadway plans, survey plats, and courthouse data
• Knowledge of supervisory principles and practices to include hiring, performance management, employee development and discipline
• Skill in providing and promoting good customer service to internal and external customers
• Skill in the use of mobile devices, computers, and software applications
Minimum Qualifications
• Land Surveyor's license
• Valid driver's license
• Knowledge of VDOT survey and APELSCIDLA standards, specifications, policies, and procedures
• Extensive knowledge of engineering and construction survey criteria, methods, standards and specifications
• Considerable knowledge of survey engineering principles as they relate to engineering survey and roadway design
• Skill in the use of computers and software applications to include survey, CADD, and digital terrain modeling software.
• Ability to collect, analyze and compile data into technical reports and presentations
• Skill in the use of electronic data collection and surveying equipment
• Ability to read and interpret roadway plans, survey plats, and courthouse data
• Knowledge of supervisory principles and practices to include hiring, performance management, employee development and discipline
Additional Considerations
• Experience supervising and managing engineering survey functions in the transportation industry
• Experience developing and reviewing scope of work and fee proposals for survey work
• Skill in the use of MS Office products, MS Teams and SharePoint for communication, collaboration, and workload planning and monitoring

This position is classified as “designated” to emergency operations and may be required to work outside of normal work hours, on weekends and holidays during emergency situations which may include but are not limited to inclement weather, disaster response and emergency operations to ensure the safety of the traveling public.
