Job Duties


Are you someone driven by innovation, with a passion for design? We are looking for professionals with Materials Engineering interest, who can support the Virginia Department of Transportation in constructing new roadway designs to keep Virginia safe and moving!



VDOT’s Richmond District is looking for an Engineer supervisor to perform full range of supervisory duties to include counseling, evaluating hiring, and training employees. Effectively manage assigned projects to ensure timely and accurate completion. Review plans prepared by staff and others to ensure correctness. Supervise professional engineering and technical staff in the performance of engineering duties. Communicate with internal VDOT staff, local government staff, consultants, citizens and FHWA regarding transportation projects and programs.



This position will ensure through materials sampling, testing and observation that materials proposed for use by contractors and suppliers conform to contract and purchase order requirements.

Minimum Qualifications


• Experience applying materials quality control and quality assurance practices.
• Skill in the use of materials testing equipment and tools
• Ability to perform manual labor (securing, handling and preparing material samples).
• Ability to supervise a diversified staff to include performance management and discipline, work planning and prioritization.
• Skill in the use of computers and software applications
• Ability to gather and analyze data and prepare technical reports.
• Knowledge of material sampling and testing procedures
• Experience in highway construction and maintenance methods and materials to include their properties and performance.
• Ability to work in the area of low-level ionizing radiation.
• Materials certifications vary by position. ability to obtain combination of certifications that apply to specific materials position within 12 months of employment.


Additional Considerations


• Possession of required materials certifications
• Experience in materials quality control and quality assurance practices.
• A combination of training, experience, or education in Civil Engineering, Materials Engineering or related field desired.
• Experience highway civil engineering.
• Experience in project management for transportation projects.
• Supervisory experience in a transportation engineering environment.

Valid driver’s license and approved safety shoes required. Fingerprint-based criminal history record check, references, work history and DMV driving record will be verified prior to employment. Ability to obtain combination of certifications that apply to specific materials position within 12 months of employment HazMat, RSO (Radiological Safety Officer Training), ACI Field, ACI Strength Testing, Soils and Aggregate Certification, Nuclear Certification, Asphalt Field and Lab, and Concrete Field School certifications. Applicants must be eligible to work in the United States. H1B VISA Sponsorship is not available. VDOT utilizes a market-based pay program, which has been approved by DHRM. Therefore, advertised rates of pay may or may not align with the Commonwealth pay bands.
